Yes, the car-crashing saga of the ‘Twisted Metal’ video games will zoom over to streaming with a live action series on NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Deadline reported. An adaptation of the classic PlayStation video games, the series will be a comedic half-hour series starring Anthony Mackie (‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’), who will also serve as executive producer.
An official synopsis for the series gives us an idea of the playful, comedic edge the show will take on:
Mackie stars as John Doe, a smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives. With no memory of his past, John gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make his wish of finding community come true, but only if he can survive an onslaught of savage vehicular combat.
John Doe joins forces with a car thief and bites off more than he can chew, navigating a post-apocalyptic wasteland and facing deranged drivers speeding through the open roads.
Further setting the tone for a television comedy take on ‘Twisted Metal’ will be a team that includes writer and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith (‘Cobra Kai’), Will Arnett and Marc Forman, who secured rights to the project, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (‘Deadpool,’ ‘Zombieland’).
This will be PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures Television’s second foray into television adaptations of their gaming properties — we can also keep an eye out for HBO’s buzzy live action adaptation of ‘The Last of Us.’ Part of a new trend, perhaps?
