Academy Award winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) brings us a beautifully wicked tale of privilege and desire. Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.

I was able to catch a surprising screening of ‘Saltburn’ at Fantastic Fest 2023 this past September. While I was disappointed this was the surprise screening, after reflecting on it, I really really enjoyed the film. That being said, I probably wasn’t in the right headspace for a film like this, when I was expecting a horror movie. Which probably skewed my initial impressions. Overall the sophomore effort from filmmaker Emerald Fennell is a strong entry in her career and Barry Keoghan kills it and should definitely get Oscar buzz for this role.

The performances were wonderful and it is a twisted weird story, with some twist and turns, but definitely is a slow burn as it unfolds. It can be an uncomfortable watch at times and awkward as it keeps you guessing what Barry Keoghan’s true motives are.

‘Saltburn’ is coming to Amazon Prime Video December 22, 2023.
