After directing an array of sci-fi treasures from 2010’s hidden gem Monsters, to 2014’s Godzilla, and finally the impeccable Rogue One (2016), Gareth Edwards is bringing a tremendous original feature to screens via The Creator. Written by Chris Weitz and Edwards, The Creator takes place in a future where humans and AI robots live together, until AI detonates a nuclear bomb over Los Angeles.
Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.
The two-minute clip sneaks a peak into what looks like some incredible world-building. The design for the AI technology and futuristic tech is bound to catch your eye, and hints at a meticulously detailed and complex world.
The film looks especially made for the big screen; with huge sets, huge sequences, and equally huge ideas. Blurring the lines between human and AI, the film looks like it might raise some ethical and existential questions, but all wrapped in an thrilling, action-filled package.
The film is set to release in theaters on September 29.
