We all love to bemoan Hollywood’s commitment to rebooting our favorite properties, but if it brings attention to an under appreciated gem and reimagines it for a new generation then maybe it’s all worth it! This is what we hope will happen as Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions takes on a remake of the Wes Craven urban classic ‘The People Under The Stairs.’ While the project is still in the early stages of development Deadline has reported that the screenplay will be written by Ezra Claytan Daniels (‘Doom Patrol,’ ‘Night Sky’) and Win Rosenfeld will join Peele as a producer.
Craven wrote and directed the original 1991 film which follows Fool (Brandon Adams) as he breaks into the home of his family’s ghoulish landlords only to discover that what is going on is worse and weirder than he could ever imagine. As he tries to escape their nightmarish home he meets their daughter Alice (A.J. Langer) who he hopes to help out of her own horrifying situation. This basic plot synopsis can’t begin to describe how batshit crazy this film gets so if you haven’t seen it put it on your list to check out! Hopefully the remake doesn’t tone down the off the rails characters and plot that fans of Craven’s film love.
