If you fondly remember Jeff Daniels battling it out with a giant spider, you’ll be pleased to hear this: the 1990 creature feature ‘Arachnophobia’ will soon find new life.
Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Christopher Landon (‘Paranormal Activity’ sequels, ‘Happy Death Day’) will write and direct a remake of the creepy-crawly classic. He’ll be collaborating with James Wan (‘Aquaman,’ ‘Insidious’) and Michael Clear’s Atomic Monster as producers, while Frank Marshall (director of the original ‘Arachnophobia’) will executive produce.
The original film followed a small-town doctor played by Jeff Daniels, who finds himself dealing with a massive infestation of deadly spiders that no exterminator can take out. ‘Arachnophobia’ was a financial success, spawning its own iconic PC game and ultimately doing for spiders what ‘Jaws’ did for sharks: ruining them for 1990 moviegoers.
Christopher Landon should be able to nail the horror comedy tone of a deadly spider attack,, having done so with Blumhouse’s ‘Happy Death Day’ series and and 2020’s body-switching teen slasher ‘Freaky.’ No details as of yet on casting or newly devised plot.
Either way, there’s sure to be some fun in store for the remake. Now we can only hope that the new film will also have its own computer game as well.
